Ok so I know I totally suck at keeping this blog up to date (highly doubt anyone reads this anyways), but I just wrote a paper for one of my classes about my grandparents, and I just thought I'd share it. It was actually fun to write since I got to reflect back on some of the times we've had. I definitely have the best grandparents :)
My grandparents have always been a huge part of my life. As
a little kid, I remember always being over at my grandparents house; it
probably helped that they only lived about 2 minutes away. My sisters and I
were always begging to go over there and anytime we had to leave, we threw huge
fits. We absolutely loved being at their house. My grandma, specifically, has
always been the kind of person to do whatever made her grandkids happy. Most of
the time though, all she had to do was let us go swimming and then make us ice
cream cones to eat in the pool. One thing she did that I really remember is
every so often she would pick up just one of us (it was just my two sisters and
I at the time, way before my brothers and cousins were born) and we would have
a “special day”, which basically meant we could do absolutely anything we
wanted to. Generally, with us being all girls, we would go out to eat at our
favorite restaurant, which was usually the buffet restaurant, Luby’s, that
unfortunately went out of business, and then we would go shopping and we were
allowed to buy one thing. After that, we would go home and do something fun,
like play with the toy we got or make cookies or play a game. Then we got to
stay the night, which really was the best part of this whole “special day”
thing. Spending the night at grandma’s was the very best. She always read us a
story and tucked us in, and always made sure we had a glass of water by our bed
just in case. Also, it was always ok to climb in bed with her and grandpa,
which as a kid, you just feel like you’re in the safest place in the world. In
the morning, my grandma would make pancakes or waffles or whatever we wanted
for breakfast. And then you got to spend the whole day doing whatever else you
wanted to with grandma! I’m not kidding, this was like the thing I looked
forward to when I was a kid, well besides Christmas. I have no idea if my
grandma knows how much those times meant to me, but I think it was a wonderful
thing for her to do. It helped build our relationship and even now, as an
adult, I still feel like I can go to her with anything and she will always be
there and always care. Another thing that my grandparents did is take us
places. Every couple of years she would take us to California, which of course
meant Disneyland! My uncle also lives there so we would visit him and go to the
beach and do other tourist things. Also, every summer my grandparents would
take us on one long road trip to Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska. I have a ton of
family out there so it was always really fun for us to go visit them and of
course spend all that time with my grandparents. Even now, they still invite me
to go on their summer vacation with them (to the same places, by the way!) and
it is one of my very favorite things. I love getting to stay with them, usually
playing road trip games or cards when we stop at a hotel. I have to say that I
am one of the luckiest people to have the grandparents that I do. There are so
many memories I have with them that I honestly don’t know where I would be
without them. They definitely have taught me so much about love and family and
how to be a good grandparent, of course!
